Crime and Punishment Essay Societal Rehabilitation Fyodor Dostoyevskys work in Crime and Punishment can be cited as largely autobiographical. Although the author never committed anything like the atrocious murders depicted in the novel, the nihilistic traits of his protagonist, Raskolnikov, closely resemble his own ideals as a youth. In 1947, Dostoyevsky joined the revolutionary Petrashevist cause. The author and this group of radical socialists narrowly escaped death after being arrested by police. They received a pardon from the czar only moments before a firing squad was to take aim. They were sentenced instead to four years in a Siberian labor camp. Sports became the shape of American culture in the early 1900s. It was the face of masculinity and manliness. Sports were created to show off the strength and toughness in men, and according to past physical educators, women did not possess these traits. Therefore, it was frowned upon for females to participate in sporting activity. Critics of women justified these assumptions by providing false medical accusations as to why women should not participate in sports. Some critics believed that if women participated in sports, it would cause reproductive damage, as well as loss of sexual control (Cahn, 1994). Physical educators also concluded that if women participated in athletics they would promote â€Å"sexual licentiousness,† and â€Å"blur natural gender differences† (Cahn, 1994). It was also believed that girls were biologically weaker and contained unsteadiness because of the menstrual cycle. Therefore, women were encouraged to not participate in physical activity, especially when they were menstruating.
